Artist Profile - Maryanne Falk
Maryanne was born in Cowra and raised in country New South Wales. She lived in a number of towns and cities in NSW before settling in Wagga Wagga in the mid 1980s, later moving to Canberra in 1996.
Maryanne developed a love of nature at an early age. Her parent’s love of gardening influenced her interest in plants, vegetables and the little creatures that visited the garden, along with the birds and pets.
Maryanne’s appreciation of art began in her teens, when her family lived in Broken Hill. She had the pleasure of meeting and seeing some of the great works of the “Brush-man of the Bush”.
Maryanne continued her interest in Art and attended a number of exhibitions of local and interstate Artists, at the Riverina Galleries, Wagga Wagga where she met Artist and owner Graeme Smith. In 1992 she commenced oil painting with Graeme as raw beginner, specialising mainly in landscapes and still life. However, her quest to learn watercolour led her to classes with Heather Bell.
After settling in Canberra, Maryanne attended classes at ANU covering botanical and wildlife in watercolour, with Helen Fitzgerald and still life and figure oil painting classes, with Trish Holloway. In 2003 she joined Helen’s monthly watercolour class, later changing to the botanical class.
Maryanne further developed her artistic skills through attendance at various classes and workshops, including those arranged by the Canberra Institute of Botanical Art with teachers Susannah Blaxill, Leonie Norton, Liz Sherras-Clarke and Mary Ann Mein.
Maryanne enjoys gardening and flower arranging and has successfully completed a course in Ikebana. These interests have enhanced her knowledge of botany. Maryanne is a current member of Artist Society of Canberra, Botanical Art Society of Australia and the Wildlife and Botanical Artists Inc.
