Julia Landford

Biography

Julia has had an interest in art from an early age, and developed a keen interest in flora and fauna from her life in Papua New Guinea. Julia has prepared illustrations of butterflies, beetles and other flora and fauna from both Australia and PNG. She has also had an ongoing interest in using photography as a method of recording and observing nature.

Julia established the Wildlife and Botanical Artists group in 1998, and was founding President for two years. She has participated in various art workshops including a workshop with Susannah Blaxill, and studied water media with Noel Ford at the ANU School of Art in 2006. Julia recently initiated the first Wildlife Art @ Discovery exhibition as a special national event to be hosted by Wildlife and Botanical Artists Incorporated. Though currently working on a career in international development, Julia maintains an active interest in art.

Subject, style and media

Inspirations for Julia’s artwork range from birds, amphibians and insects to Australian wildflowers, native plants, mushrooms and fungi.

Most of Julia’s work has been based on close observation of flora and fauna, and at times based on her own photography. Julia has used a realist, representative style in many paintings, attempting to capture special features with the use of various mediums. She is keen to explore a range of styles and learn new techniques, including collage.

Julia has experience with oils, pen and ink, pencil, watercolour, gouache and acrylics for her artwork.

Specialty area

Julia has a particular interest in presenting conservation messages through her artwork and has recently focused on learning more about endangered wildlife species such as the northern corroboree frog. She is also interested in undertaking a series of works depicting the fungi of the ACT region, with one painting in the series completed.
