Arlene WilliamsArlene Williams was born and raised in Adelaide. Since then she has lived in several Australian states, and has travelled extensively in Europe, Africa, North America and Asia. She now lives in Canberra, her home for almost fifteen years. Arlene finds this mix of local and international experience a bountiful source of topic and theme. Her main media are watercolour, pastel, acrylic and mixed media. She paints across a wide spectrum of subject matter including wildlife, botanic, landscape and still life. Arlene particularly likes to paint water, and so the occasional waterbird painting will be exhibited alongside other paintings of Australian and exotic birds. Her childhood drawing book is filled with coloured pencil sketches of birds and animals. A safari tour of Botswana and Zimbabwe in 1995 sparked an interest in painting wildlife, especially birds. Arlene's portrayals of nature vary from realist to design-oriented artwork. She aspires to transfer as much as possible of the colour, light and atmosphere of her subjects into paintings for the viewer to share. Her art training includes: a year of drawing at the Adelaide School of Art; three years of painting as part of a Bachelor of Education at the Adelaide CAE; a year of study under master leadlight artist Cedar Prest; and a semester of botanic art with botanical artist Robyn Hill. Arlene is an exhibiting member of the Wildlife and Botanical Artists' Group, the Artists' Society of Canberra, and the Pastel and Paint group of artists. Her paintings hang in private local collections, as well as interstate and overseas. She has won prizes and commendations at a variety of venues, including a first for pastel (2001), a second for watercolour (2002), and a third for both landscape and mixed media (2003) at the Royal Canberra Show.
