Workshop: Elements of Natural History- Heidi Willis (Sept 14/15)

FRUITS and INSECTS ~ This two day workshop will look at the wonderful world of illustrating fruits and insects, how to approach each element as individual paintings, and how they work together compositionally.

Participants will work towards completing one finished piece that incorporates a combination of elements and interest. Reference materials will be provided for this course. Working with watercolours, students will work through a range of different elements, covering the processes involved to produce a completed painting. Examples of each will be demonstrated, followed by hands on painting, allowing each student to be guided through the processes needed to produce work such as this.

With an emphasis on discovering and refining your own unique style wherever possible, we will explore basic drawing techniques, composition, brush skills, working with colour, and have fun with different watercolour techniques such as washes, glazing, and dry brushing to achieve results relevant to each subject. Students should come away from these workshops with a better understanding of the medium, techniques, concept building and composition, work processes, and confidence that allows each to refine their skills and continue on working independently… not to mention a fantastic new enthusiasm for this wonderful topic!
