Artist Profile: Di Mortimer

Since childhood I have enjoyed an enduring interest and appreciation for the marvels of the natural world. Early years were spent exploring and discovering the wonders of fauna and flora to be found in the sandstone regions of bushland and coast around Sydney’s northern suburbs. Upon relocating to the ACT in the early 1970's my interest was furthered by undertaking studies in horticulture at Canberra Institute of TAFE and employment for some time in related areas.

During the 1980’s with an evolving interest in the visual arts I undertook studies at the Australian National University Institute of the Arts obtaining a Diploma in Art, majoring in ceramics. This was followed by further studies in clay and glaze technology together with studio ceramic production practices at Illawarra Institute of TAFE. Throughout the 1990's I was an active studio potter, exhibiting work locally and interstate as well as teaching adult and children’s pottery classes. The sources of inspiration for my decorative work continued primarily to come from observations of the natural world.

Over a number of years I have sought to develop design concepts and extend skills in a range of art mediums. In recent times focus has been on representing and interpreting aspects of nature in the mediums of watercolour, pastel, printing and collage as well as combinations of these in mixed media paintings. I constantly find the beauty of Australia’s natural environment a source of great pleasure and an excellent resource to draw upon for works. Weekly bushwalks and photography with members of the Australian Native Plant Society into the many reserves in and around the ACT continue to inspire and arouse my awareness of this wonderful heritage we have to appreciate.

For more than two decades I have been exhibiting my paintings regularly throughout the ACT and surrounding regions both in group exhibitions and as a member of local art organisations.  I became an active member of Wildlife and Botanical Artists group shortly after it’s inception and over the years have been privileged to hold a number of executive positions within this active group of nature loving artists.
